Small hinges swing big doors. It's the little things we do daily that lead us toward or away from wellness. Here are five things I aim to do daily, and on those odd days that I don't - I notice it. In line with The 7 Pillars To Wellness these five things help me regain momentum after hard times. Hard times create strong people, and strong people create good times.

Spend time in the Sun

Whether it's a morning sunrise, within the first few hours of the day, a midday break, sunshine entering through the windows of my office, afternoon rays heating up my kitchen space, or evening sunset colours putting on a show - I make sure I spend time in natural light. Where possible, I leave curtains partially or wide open to remind me of the beauty light provides. Light is crucial for our cells to produce energy. We are much like plants in that way. We need light to grow and regenerate.

Move my body

Run, walk, dance, stretch, lift weights, stairmaster. Movement is medicine. Keep blood flowing, oxygen traveling, Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) pumping - a crucial protein that acts as a growth factor for nerve cells (neurons), promoting their survival, growth, and plasticity, particularly in the brain and spinal cord. It's kinda like fertilizer for the nervous system. It's best increased through bursts of movement. You'll also start firing endorphins, dopamine, serotonin which will all contribute to making you feel better.

Say thank you

Gratitude. Sometimes to myself, sometimes to special people in my life. Sometimes via text. Sometimes through prayer. Sometimes in person, and really mean it. Thank you to the version of me that got me this far. Thank you to God for carrying me when I was unable to. Thank you to my family for not giving up on me. Thank you to that little birdie singing outside my window. I make a point out of staying playful and noticing the little things in life, marvel at butterflies, the stars, leaves falling of trees with grace, caffeine. I am deeply grateful for everything I get to experience. Even the heartache. How beautiful I get to feel such grief after having loved so deeply. "What's wrong is always available, so is what's right." - Tony Robbins.

Write it down

There's this saying I inherited from my mama. It is a modified Balkan proverb or joke. She edited it for the lesson to be straight forward: "Smart people write things down, others forget" (her version is a little more direct).

Listening to this for 20 years, I've made a habit of writing down projects, notes, inspirations, stories, book titles, my gym program, affirmations, reminders, important dates and events. Ask me what's on for the day, I honestly won't know of the top of my head. I'd have to check my calendar. All I need to know is where my feet are right now. Buying coffee, running 5km under 20min, writing this blog. What's next? I'll see when I finish, it's written down so I don't have to worry.

Mirror work

I have a lot of mirrors in my house. I always have. This is something I am very passionate about. Having mirrors to check myself. To be self aware. Am I proud of the reflection? Can I look at myself and honestly say I am living in alignment with my values? Where am I holding myself back? What am I feeling? What am I holding onto in my body? Who do I need to forgive?

The Bible uses mirrors to illustrate the need to look closely at one's life according to God's law, to be transformed by His word, and to recognize that our earthly vision is incomplete. Mirrors are a reminder of my humanness, to show myself self-compassion. I have written a few phrases on my mirrors: "Speak to me like you're speaking to someone you love" reminds me to be kind to myself and choose loving people. "People who feel good about themselves produce good results" reminds me to live in alignment and correct myself, lead by example. "Say thank you 3x" reminds me to fix my focus.
